ELOISE HESS

Working at the intersection of perception, memory, and material process, Hess uses printmaking to explore how we register and distort what we see. Each print emerges from a layered process that mirrors the workings of perception itself, alternating between photographic imagery, drawing, and encaustic techniques. These layers, whether few or many, are semi-transparent and congealed, creating a surface that is at once immediate and elusive. Central to her work are photographs by or of the artist’s father, an artist living with early-onset Alzheimer’s. The prints reflect a perceptual terrain shaped by fragmentation, where memory and image falter and reform. Through this sustained, iterative process, the artist visualizes the dissonance between what is seen and what is retained, attending to the evolving nature of perception and its limits.
